Do authors Owe a Duty to Society According to Ethics?
What obligations, if any, do authors have to the public? Do they have an ethical duty to check the information they present as fact? Do they have a responsibility to write language that won't promote hatred or instigate violence? I agree, as do ex-president of the United States John F. Kennedy (JFK), best-selling novelist E.B. White, and journalist I.F. Stone.
I admire JFK's statements as a writer who frequently criticizes American society and is extremely concerned about the numerous ways it fails to guarantee liberty and justice for all. In order to survive in an intrusive and harmful culture, it is important for myself and other people to rediscover who we are.
