Avoid Siri Breaking Your iPhone with Focus Modes

AI is good at identifying patterns, and ever more frequently, it’s better at that than humans (the previous champions). According to University College London, for example, AI can be taught to identify cancerous lesions that human would have difficulty spotting. Awesome.

However, AI has its risks, just like any other technology, and I fell victim to one. It’s one thing for AI to draw human attention to patterns, but it’s quite another for it to make choices on our behalf.

Combine that with the human tendency to accept defaults without paying attention, and trouble can result. Who bothers to check every default?

That’s how I missed three calls from my doctor and had to wait nearly four days to obtain medical advice. I blamed the mobile phone network, bad weather conditions, and personal fallibility (usually a good bet).

Actually, it was the fault of Siri trying to be helpful, and default values I should have checked (laziness, not fallibility).
