The earthquake response in Syria provides a window into the brutal (but waning) effects of U.S. sanctions around the world.
All of us have seen the images. A 7.8-magnitude earthquake that occurred on February 6 impacted large areas of northern Syria and adjacent Turkey.
Turkey has a functioning administration and has received and distributed a substantial amount of relief from all over the world since the earthquake. Syria though? The extremely strict sanctions that Washington and the EU have kept in place on the nation for many years now hinder the supply of relief to the people of that country. The government-held regions of the country suffer the most as a result of these sanctions, but the flow of help to those living in the rebel-held regions is also severely hampered.
The earthquake destroyed homes in northwest Syria.
