Hope For Those Who Are Running Out of It: Ketamine, Psilocybin, and Depression
I've seen a lot of individuals receiving electroconvulsive therapy, or "ECT," for depression that won't respond to other treatments. A current ECT treatment, carried out under anesthesia, is as unemotional an experience as one can conceive, despite Jack Nicholson's portrayal of Randle McMurphy's ECT therapy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
Patients who have not responded well to conventional forms of treatment for depression should still turn to ECT, which has a response rate of at least 40% and possibly more.
What about the remaining 50–60% of depressed individuals who simply refuse to improve despite receiving treatment? What if, on the other hand, a person has tried standard antidepressant therapy and is worried about the negative effects?
