I Flunked My Debut

How I Flunked My Debut as a Music Journalist and Learned to Rock On

Ona sun-soaked afternoon twelve years ago, I found myself walking on Rua dos Braga's cobblestone pavement in Porto. I’m back in the city with the Rock n’ Heavy magazine crew.

Strolling through this historic street, joining Cedofeita to Mártires da Liberdade. I’m feeling a different vibe. It’s Sunday, and people are having drinks downtown in Ribeira or enjoying the sun at Foz do Douro. Many probably headed to the beach in Matosinhos.

All the small businesses that sprouted and brought new life to this street since my college days are closed for the weekend. For now, life seems to have stopped, and I’m drawn to the pockets of culture and life tucked away in unassuming corners and behind shop windows.

It’s still early in the afternoon as we wait outside No. 95, one of Porto’s picturesque buildings and an example of the city’s iconic architecture. With my back against the Eden House's warm, sun-soaked walls, it feels as if they bear a silent promise of stories waiting to be told.

I take a minute to gaze at the 19th-century building’s façade. A remnant of an era long past. Nestled within this amalgam of colorful walls, the venue is the embodiment of the fusion between history and contemporary allure.
