Learn to Use the Three Legs That Support a Powerful Personal Essay

Today we’re discussing essays — personal essays about memories. However, many of us can’t define that elusive, confusing genre. And that’s essential if we are going to create meaningful work.

You may remember the five-paragraph essay format many of us learned in high school. It contained one introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs to provide support and idea development, and a concluding paragraph.

Writers can easily adapt this essay format to blog posts, letters to the editor, book reviews, or many other uses.

However, this format doesn’t work well for personal essays, especially what used to be known as autobiographical essays. Now, these are often called memoir essays.
