How Can We Draw Better Political Figures?
Franklin Roosevelt portraits were frequently found hanging on the walls of homes in the 1930s. In the moment, this made sense. He was an extremely well-liked politician, with popularity ratings that occasionally reached 80% or more. But it was more than that; Roosevelt was well-liked both as a leader and a person in addition to leading the nation through difficult periods like the Great Depression and World War II. He evolved into a sort of father figure for the country.
It seems like a long time has passed since we had a leader as well-liked as FDR. That's OK in some ways. Political hagiography gives me the creeps a little bit. As opposed to that,
