To find enormous squid, David Grann has sailed a small boat. He has looked into the death of the foremost authority on Sherlock Holmes in the world. He has written profiles of Rickey Henderson, John McCain, and the Aryan Brotherhood. He has explored a jungle in the Amazon.

Since 2003, Grann's stories have been available to readers of The New Yorker. His debut book, The Lost City of Z, was inspired by a magazine article he wrote in 2005. Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson, and Tom Holland starred in the film adaptation. An adaptation of another book, Killers of the Flower Moon: An American Crime and the Birth of the FBI, will be released in theaters in October under Martin Scorsese's direction and starring
