Between escapism and escape in The Voyager Diary.
Traveling allows for a form of self-expression that the human soul is unable to engage in in everyday life. When traveling the world, much is made of the locations you visit and the people you meet. I'm not certain that's where it is, though. Few pictures taken for the amusement of Internet strangers, meticulously penciled and arranged to enable time for present shopping and trains in another country (oh, a language unto itself constructed of confusion and travelers' checks), cannot convey the experience of the traveler.
Rather, one needs look at the very foundation of our traveling in order to achieve that travel-specific nirvana. The joy and guilt-free indulgence that we feel when we indulge are what we remember, not the lovely photographs.
