Being 25 and Living in Greece Sucks

In Nikaia, a woman was killed by her husband in the first such tragic incident of 2023, highlighting the ongoing issue of violence against women. The victim, a 54-year-old mother, was reportedly strangled by her husband, who then called the police to admit his crime. The husband has a history of domestic violence, and neighbors had previously alerted the police about his abusive behavior.

One year ago, during a television discussion concerning another femicide case, a police officer made the following statement: “He acted recklessly. If, at the moment he killed his wife, it was an unfortunate incident driven by a sudden fit of anger, in other words, if he lost control and became irrational, had he immediately contacted the police, he might not have faced more than a 4-year prison term. This would have been viewed as a heated family dispute without premeditation, given his previously clean record. In such a scenario, he could have received a 5–6 year sentence. It’s a tragedy — a young life ruined.”
