How phony Facebook pages targeted Moroccan journalists under arrest
A organized and phony effort on Facebook circulated obscene and disparaging content about the journalists Omar Radi and Soulaimane Raissouni, complementing the surveillance, harassment, and eventual imprisonment of the journalists by Moroccan authorities. Over a period of six years, some of the 43 Facebook accounts in this network were used to promote media sites linked to Moroccan security services in an effort to malign Moroccan dissidents and journalists. Additionally, it propagated false information concerning Morocco's usage of Pegasus spyware and denigrated Amnesty International's probe into its application. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, Radi and Raissouni are being detained on "trumped up sexual assault and'morals' charges," which are consistent with the government's attempts to stifle critical journalism and dissident voices.
