Legal Leaf: The State's Attorney for a Rural County Places Mandatory Health Warnings in Marijuana Dispensaries
In 23 states, marijuana is permitted for recreational use, and in 40 states, it is legal for medical use. However, Patrick Kenneally, the State's Attorney for McHenry County in rural Illinois, drew a boundary. He stated last week that he will file a lawsuit against shops that neglected to prominently display his carefully worded health risk warnings.
The State's Attorney made it plain in a press release that dispensaries must provide information about the mental health risks related with usage, "including psychosis, depression, and suicidal ideation." He allegedly threatened to sue any marijuana businesses that refused. The first and only US jurisdiction to introduce these limits to date is McHenry County, 50 miles northwest of Chicago.
