AI for the Antipattern: Beyond prediction, toward creation
AI will advance technology but we should describe its impact on science more carefully. Is the business of science to be productive or to question? Does science construct, or does it provoke and prompt, catalyzing conversation and debate?
If technology’s job is to find answers based on patterns, science’s sandbox is to design more interesting questions in granular detail.
To advance beyond simply doing its job of advancing the linear progression of technological development, AI will need to design an inquiry. Will AI’s use of big data allow it to rapidly grow branches of interconnected, multidisciplinary, scientific questions?
In order for AI to ever become independently creative — and not derivative based on machine learning inputs and big data — it will need to advance beyond predicting based on pattern.
