Here’s An All-in-One Guide to the Way I DIYed Audiobook Production
Below are the steps I took, the nitty-gritty DIY guide to equipment, recording, uploading and pricing that I could not find all in one place anywhere. But first, some important details to have in order if you want to record your book:
You must own the rights
When I signed the contract for my forthcoming memoir, I held on to the audio rights. It’s not unusual for audio deals to be negotiated separately, but audio rights were included in the original contract for my book, which would have meant the publisher had a right to keep a royalty share of the rights. I asked to keep them.
Recording an audiobook for my small press memoir would, I knew, entail me taking on the majority of the labor and expense. That labor and the things you’ll need are listed below, so you can decide for yourself if you want to split the profits. (The expenses you’ll have to Google for so this doesn’t require constant updating, but I’ve used searchable terms.)
