The algorithm

The algorithm needs to be eliminated.

Based on our identified biases and vulnerabilities, algorithms customize material to increase view time, likes, and shares. At first glance, it appears innocent, but the unforeseen implications are severe.

Without algorithms to customize feeds, social media platforms lose their ability to maximize interaction and make money. But the real human connection can only be recreated online by giving up on optimization for usage stats.

To keep us interested for as long as possible, algorithms curate our individualized feeds. Content that arouses feelings or supports beliefs is encouraged. Nuance and complexity are obscured.

As a result, algorithms only present viewpoints that are likely to catch our attention, leading to harmful filter bubbles and echo chambers. Suppression of opposing viewpoints weakens society's capacity to reach consensus.

Platforms transform into virtual worlds that engagement-boosting algorithms govern.
