The Conformity Machine: How the Panopticon of Social Media Shapes Identity

My social media feed does not reflect who I am in real life. Perfectly edited images, funny anecdotes, and political rants are the type of content we produce when we are aware of an audience. But does the dance alter as a result of the constant spotlight? We are now always being watched thanks to social media, just like animals in a glass cage. We carefully craft our online personalities, watching out for any slip-ups or windows of weakness, like greedy baboons grooming one other.

We lose ourselves in virtual worlds where we are perpetually on stage competing for the fickle favor of the audience. When someone looks at us physically, we behave differently for a split second. But we are deeply immersed online.
