They are used by tech companies to create goods that claim to make everyone's lives simpler (or more productive), and investors release a geyser of funding as a result. Everyone starts making extravagant claims and raving about the forthcoming invention of artificial intelligence, even starry-eyed journalists. Humanlike! Godlike! Omniscient!

But that kind of hype can't last forever, and eventually the industry starts to fall short. It turns out that the AI has a startling number of errors. Businesses and individuals that attempt to use it to address everyday issues find that it is prone to errors, frequently rather trivial ones.
