Researching and researching the past can be terrifying, especially when you begin to use more recent technological advancements. Particularly disturbing is the history of radiation and the methods used to study it.
It's so easy to think that something has always been handled with gravity and the necessary level of caution given how incredibly dangerous it is.
People are, sadly, merely human. Humans can also be dreadful at adhering to safety rules. You're not the only one who has chuckled at warnings like "Don't drink the acid" in workshops or questioned why explosives shouldn't be stored next to a fire.
