McCarthy's rescue by House Democrats is a terrible idea.
If Matt Gaetz is to be believed, the House will soon have to decide whether to keep Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House.
That query has no known conclusion. Gaetz has appeared to have enough Republican support at various points this year to prevent McCarthy from retaining the Speakership. There has been a tacit assumption McCarthy would lose any vote of confidence brought among his own members due to the slim Republican majority and new procedures that allow Gaetz to force the question by himself.
However, McCarthy might endure, even inside his own caucus. Ironically, a number of hard-right activists will likely be crucial to the Speaker's survival in that situation.
