self-expression and passion

How self-expression and passion are challenged by higher education

"a lengthy essay on a specific topic, especially one written for a university degree or diploma,"

While not everyone has written a dissertation, everyone is aware of them. The essay that finally determines the value of your degree, years of arduous study, and pride are all measured by a single percentage on an email. Not knowing what to write about for your dissertation—should it be a specialty topic I'm interested in?—is the first symptom of difficulty. Or should I give people a quick read on a familiar subject? Both are equally challenging. Of course, personal preference has a big impact on your writing. I find that when I am passionate about a subject, I write better.
