The Astonishment Following
It had ended. After 20 resentful years of being a ballerina, my tulle-twirling captivity was finally over. I felt at ease. My mother became enraged. She forbade me from returning home from Manhattan. I then moved in with my boyfriend in his sky-high Upper East Side apartment. And my way of life entirely changed.
I was exposed to the city I had grown up in but had never spent any time visiting once my physical rehabilitation was over and I was able to roam around. He showed me everything, and I was given free reign to eat whatever I pleased for the first time in my life. I sampled a huge variety of meals and desserts.
