I'm from an Asian nation where hierarchies and rankings are everything. I can still picture my mother telling everyone she met, including the neighbors, that her daughter was always in the top three. She didn't compliment me directly, but she did it by bragging to other mothers. As a result, I learnt how to win my mother's approval and love from a young age by excelling in school.
