What being human means is: How nonprofit news companies prioritize reporting on mental health
Throughout the 1990s, Rose Hoban observed many patients whose care was hampered, frequently by medical regulations they were unaware of.
She immediately changed her focus to journalism in order to further the interests of her patients, joining North Carolina Public Radio (WUNC) in 2005. There she started writing extensively about the state's mental health system.
Five employees were covering health care for the competing local daily newspaper when she arrived at the news station. All five of those individuals had left by the time she left in the middle of 2011. Hoban claimed that one of the things that motivated her to launch was realizing that she was "the last person standing."
